Fever in Immunocompromised Patients
 Pizzo PA.
"Fever is a manifestation of the release of proinflammatory cytokines from macrophages, lymphocytes, ... as a consequence of infection or inflammation. The HIV protease inhibitors have been shown to suppress the production of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, and TNF-alpha (Al-Harthi et al., 1997). Is there the possibility that the HIV protease inhibitors, by blocking pyrogenic proinflammatory cytokines (immunosuppression), may result in HIV-infected individuals feeling better with an improved quality of life?"
